Take Your Kid to Work Day

Posted on: April 27, 2026

Take Your Kid to Work Day was April 23, and the City of Auburn Hills joined in. I brought my kid, Liam, along with eight of my coworkers' children, ages six to 13. Alright, technically Liam is my nephew, but if anyone asks, he's mine, okay? "Truck" was in his early vocabulary, he was raised on Paw Patrol, and he's dressed as a police officer for Halloween, so I was pretty excited to bring him along to see our Department of Public Works, Police and Fire Departments.

The kids got to see the heart of our municipal government. The vehicles are flashy, the fire hose is a blast (pun intended), and sure they got to hit a few golf balls at our city-owned Fieldstone Golf Club, but more importantly, they saw how many moving parts and dedicated employees it takes to run a city. Liam even met our City Manager. When I explained that he oversees all the departments we visited, he said, "That's a big job!"

Maybe we'll see Liam in the police academy one day, or maybe he'll grow up to be an engineer, a chef or an electrician. We don't know. But many of us grow up in cities like Auburn Hills, and it is something special to be able to share a look at what it takes to keep one running.
