Keep Auburn Hills Clean

Posted on: May 1, 2025

The Washington Post reported Michigan experienced its windiest spring on record in 2025. With high winds comes a not-so-surprising side effect: litter. Loose trash and recyclables can easily get blown from bins into our parks, streets and natural areas, affecting the health of our community.

Litter along the Clinton River Trail.

But litter can’t blow around if it never hits the ground! Let’s keep up the momentum from Earth Day and keep Auburn Hills clean all year round.

Here are three simple ways you can help:

  • Secure your waste. Make sure your garbage and recycling bins have lids. If they don’t, tightly tie your trash bags to keep garbage contained. Break down cardboard boxes so they’re less likely to catch the wind, and place heavier items, like bottles or cans, on top of lighter ones to prevent them from flying out. Keep recyclables below the rim of your bin.
  • Clean up after your pet. Always carry a waste bag when walking your dog. I like to keep two or three tied to my dog’s leash! If you forget one, bags are available at the Opdyke trailhead on the Clinton River Trail and in some Auburn Hills parks.
  • Dispose of waste properly. Picnicking at the park? Don’t forget to tidy up after your meal. Toss all food waste, bags, wrappers, and containers in one of the trash receptacles at our parks.

Helping the environment doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. Small, everyday actions can have a big impact. The City of Auburn Hills challenges you to help us protect our shared spaces and keep our city clean and healthy. Thank you for doing your part!
