Investing in a Healthier Downtown
Posted on: June 4, 2025
Downtowns are the heart of our communities. That’s why environmental cleanup efforts in downtown areas are more than just routine maintenance. They are a vital investment to protect both economic and ecological health. Environmental cleanup plays a critical role in enhancing the quality of life. The project we call 3180 Auburn Road went beyond just removing litter. The entire site was remediated, meaning the contaminated soils and environmental hazards were removed. But how does this happen, and who pays for it?
The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA) Board, composed of Auburn Hills residents, is responsible for facilitating the revitalization of underutilized, environmentally distressed, or blighted properties, commonly referred to as brownfields, within the community. They review and recommend approval of brownfield plans and projects, oversee the implementation of brownfield redevelopment initiatives, and ensure compliance with laws, policies, and environmental standards.
In 2019, the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority began one of the most complex and vital projects in our community. It was discovered that this site had leaking underground storage tanks that were considered hazardous because the petroleum from the tanks was contaminating the soil. They worked diligently with our consultants and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to ensure compliance and received grant dollars to assist with the cleanup. It was a complicated project, but due to its proximity to the Clinton River, the board recognized it as an essential project. Through their leadership and guidance, we’ve reached a milestone on this property. After six years of planning, testing, and clean-up, the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority received what’s called “closure” of the site, meaning EGLE was satisfied with the work done on the site to ensure long-term compliance with environmental regulations.

Over my years here at the City, I’ve been a part of many brownfield projects, but I must say I feel that this one is among my top three for both success and interest. This project highlights Auburn Hills’ commitment to sustainable redevelopment and economic resilience.
