Hanging Up the Helmet
Posted on: May 30, 2025
After an incredible 45 years of service, the Auburn Hills Fire Department proudly celebrates the retirement of one of its most respected and accomplished firefighters, Firefighter Gary Chapman. Known not only for his dedication to excellent service but also his passion for training, he has left an indelible mark on the department and the firefighting community.
Throughout his career, Gary was named Firefighter of the Year three times, including 2013, when he was named the American Legion Firefighter of the Year for the State of Michigan, a testament to his extraordinary contributions and impact.
I was fortunate to work with Gary when I started my career as a paid-on-call firefighter and later as a full-time firefighter, and his partner day in and day out. Gary has taught me the importance of continuous professional training and leading by example. Gary is always ready and willing to train anyone who asks. Over the years, he has mentored many members of the department, and his experience and teaching have strengthened our team.

His legacy extends beyond our department. Gary is an instructor at the Oakland Community College Fire Academy, where he has mentored and inspired countless future firefighters, ensuring his knowledge, values, and passion for the craft continue to shape the next generation.
As Firefighter Chapman hangs up his helmet, we extend our deepest gratitude. His service and commitment have been a cornerstone of our department. We wish him a long, happy, and healthy retirement, along with a heartfelt thank you for a career that exemplified courage, excellence, and selflessness.
