Fire Prevention

The Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB) consists of three highly trained fire inspectors: Fred Solomon, Jon Toss, and Nelson Webb. All three are also firefighters and emergency medical personnel, collectively bringing over 90 years of experience with the City of Auburn Hills.

As the City's fire inspectors, they are responsible for preventing fires and emergencies by ensuring that all buildings and areas in Auburn Hills comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines. The NFPA publishes over 300 codes and standards designed to minimize the risk and impact of fires and other hazards.

In addition to their core duties, the FPB manages several key functions for the City, including:

  • Inspections of commercial fire detection systems
  • Inspections of commercial suppression systems
  • Issuing permits and reviewing plans related to the Fire Prevention Code
  • Hazardous materials permits
  • Fire investigations
  • Public education on fire safety and prevention

Residential Roper Lock Boxes

The City of Auburn Hills is offering residents with medical conditions or mobility challenges the opportunity to obtain a residential lock box. This new model is more affordable and easier to install compared to traditional business Knox boxes. For residential use, Auburn Hills will be utilizing the CGWLR model from Roper Lock. For more information about the Roper Lock Box (Model CGWLR), please visit: Roper Lock Safety.

The residential lock box enables first responders to access a home in the event of a fire, medical emergency, or police call when the occupants are unable to answer the door or are not at home. The lock box helps prevent unnecessary damage to doors or windows during emergency entry. Homeowners provide a copy of their household key, which is securely stored in the lock box by the Fire Department. Only Fire Department and Police Department personnel will have access to the coded key for opening these residential lock boxes.

Smoke Detector Tips

Every year, home fires cause over 2,500 deaths and injure 12,600 people in the United States, with direct property losses estimated at $7.3 billion. However, home fires can be prevented! By following essential fire safety tips, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from the devastating effects of fire.

Smoke alarms are a crucial component of any home fire escape plan. In the event of a fire, smoke spreads rapidly, making early detection vital for a quick escape. Many homes lack adequate smoke alarm protection. Approximately 60% of fire deaths occur in homes with either no smoke alarms or non-functioning alarms. By following these guidelines, you can significantly enhance your home's fire safety and ensure a quicker response in the event of a fire.
