A Guide to Recreational Trail Safety on the Clinton River Trail

Posted on: June 4, 2024

Whether you’re hiking, biking, or taking a leisurely stroll along the Clinton River Trail, safety should always be top of mind. Here are some essential tips to ensure your trail adventures are both enjoyable and safe.

  1. Know Before You Go: Familiarize yourself with the distance you plan to travel. A map of the Clinton River Trail can be found at clintonrivertrail.org. Check the weather forecast before heading out and be prepared for any changes.
  2. Dress Appropriately: Wear sturdy footwear and comfortable clothing suitable for the activity and weather conditions. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
  3. Stay Hydrated: Bring an ample supply of water to stay hydrated, especially on hot days or during strenuous activities. Consider carrying electrolyte-replenishing drinks or snacks for longer outings.
  4. Travel in Groups: Whenever possible, hike or bike with a companion or group. Not only does this enhance the experience, but it also provides an extra layer of safety in case of accidents or emergencies.
  5. Be Mindful of Your Location: Know where you are by paying attention to street crossings and trail mileposts. The CRT has mile markers every half mile and the signage along the CRT is color-coded by city. If you need to request emergency services, it will help first responders find you or the location of the emergency.
  6. Follow Trail Etiquette: Be courteous to other trail users, whether they’re walkers, joggers, or cyclists. Pass on the left and announce your presence when approaching from behind. Respect trail rules and regulations, including leash laws for pets.
  7. Be Bright at Night: If walking or biking at dusk, gear up with reflective clothing and carry flashlights for visibility.
  8. Stop, Look, Listen: Treat trail intersections like road crossings. Stop before entering the intersection, look both ways for oncoming vehicles, and listen for any approaching traffic before proceeding.
  9. Be Aware of Wildlife: Refrain from feeding or approaching deer, turtles, and other wildlife.
  10. Trust Your Instincts: If you encounter a situation that feels unsafe or uncomfortable, trust your instincts and take appropriate action. Turn back if necessary, seek assistance from fellow trail users or emergency services, and always prioritize your well-being.

By following these simple guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty of the Clinton River Trail while staying safe and prepared for whatever adventures lie ahead.
