The early part of the 20th Century saw an American phenomenon in single family housing made possible by a confluence of events. The assembly line process Henry Ford brought to automobile manufacture was extended to home building. Never before in history was there such a choice in housing for the average person. From the planned communities for worker housing to mail order houses, families could achieve the American Dream. Oakland County was no exception and many of the houses we admire today are the result of kit homes and mail order houses.
