The Clinton River Trail: How it Started

Posted on: June 3, 2024

Established in 2004, the Clinton River Trail (CRT) has played a role in enhancing the health, vitality, and quality of life in the region. Stretching across 16 miles, the Clinton River Trail weaves its way through the communities of Sylvan Lake, Pontiac, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills, and Rochester. The CRT provides vital connections to several other trails in Southeast Michigan and is an integral part of two cross-state trails—the Iron Belle Trail, stretching from Belle Isle to Ironwood, and the Great Lake to Lake Trail Route #1, spanning from South Haven to Port Huron. These connections enhance recreational opportunities and support healthy lifestyles.

The Clinton River Trail is a recreational path that follows an abandoned railway track. According to Oakland County historical maps, the railroad connecting Pontiac to Romeo was constructed in 1880 and was in continuous service for over 118 years until the last freight run in 1998. Recognizing the recreational value of the railway corridor, the Auburn Hills City Council purchased this 2.1-mile length within the city limits in late 1999 and began developing the rail-to-trail.

Through the allocation of general fund resources, the city enabled the construction of the pedestrian bridge over I-75, providing safe passage for trail users and enhancing connectivity within the trail network. Furthermore, the city’s investment has facilitated necessary adjustments to accommodate developers in the area, ensuring that the trail seamlessly integrates with surrounding urban development while preserving its natural beauty and recreational value. This proactive approach underscores the city’s dedication to promoting outdoor recreation and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents.

In 2000, the trail was purchased from Grand Trunk Western Railroad for $1.8 million. In 2015, an MDOT TAP Grant funded improvements to signage and to the look and feel of the trail. In 2022, the Ralph C. Wilson Trail Maintenance fund donated $222,4000 towards the resurfacing of the trail.

Behind the scenes, the CRT is owned and maintained by the cities it runs through, however, the trail’s success wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and support of the all-volunteer Friends of the Clinton River Trail (FCRT). Serving as advocates for trail users, the FCRT works tirelessly to coordinate standards, encourage usage, and promote ongoing maintenance and improvements. Their efforts ensure that the CRT remains a valued resource for the surrounding communities.
