Be Bright at Night!

The City launched a public service campaign this week utilizing its website and social media outlets, reminding pedestrians about the importance of being seen after dark. The “Be Bright at Night” campaign is a critical reminder to those who walk, jog, run, bike, scooter, etc. that wearing bright and/or reflective clothing is imperative for pedestrian safety. The campaign was generated when a resident shared his recent experience of pulling into a side street off S. Squirrel Road and very nearly running down a young woman crossing the street. It was dark and she was in dark clothing with no reflective properties to her clothing.
It would be easy to say, “Well, he should watch where he’s going.” But on the flipside, pedestrians need to do the same and when a pedestrian comes into contact with a moving vehicle, the pedestrian always loses. The Be Bright at Night statement is a bit of a play on words. Not only does it suggest that pedestrians utilize proper attire and devices that are bright that help them to be seen, but that they also be smart (bright) about their responsibilities as a pedestrian. Bottom line — we don’t want to see any preventable injuries occur, or worse, loss of life. Be safe out there. And most importantly, BE BRIGHT AT NIGHT!
