Each summer, the Oakland County Animal Control Census Team conducts a census to ensure compliance with the Michigan State Dog Law of 1919, which requires all dogs aged four months and older to be licensed.
Licensing is crucial for public safety and ensures that all dogs in our community have up-to-date rabies vaccinations
Dog licenses can be purchased at the following locations:
A valid rabies vaccination certificate signed by your veterinarian is required to obtain a dog license.
Important Note: Dog licenses can only be purchased at the Treasurer's Office from January 1 to June 1. After June 1, licenses must be obtained from the Oakland County Animal Control building located at 1200 N Telegraph Road, Building 42E, Pontiac, MI 48341. Please be aware that license fees increase after June 1 (see fee schedule below).
On June 2, the Oakland County Animal Control Census Team will start visiting homes to ensure compliance with the State Law. Residents with unlicensed dogs will receive courtesy citations and will be given time to comply. Failure to comply within the given period will result in additional citations requiring a court appearance.
