Utility Staking

Every year, there are about 10,000 incidents of digging damaging underground utilities in Michigan. Avoid disrupting service, facing fines, or risking safety by following these steps before you dig:

1. Call MISS DIG at 811 or 800-482-7171

It's quick, free, and required by law. Contact MISS DIG before any excavation.

2. Wait for Flags

Allow at least three business days for utilities to mark underground lines with flags.

3. Hand Dig to Expose Lines

Don't make assumptions about the depth and location of utility lines. Dig by hand to expose the lines before using power equipment. Be sure to dig carefully; a sharp shovel can do a lot of unintentional damage.

4. Respect the Flags

Keep flags in place until your project is complete or after 21 days. Ensure they are not removed or disturbed.

Note to Parents

The flags marking utility lines can attract children. If a flag is removed, call MISS DIG to have the lines re-marked. Do not replace the flags yourself.
