Auburn Hills, MI—September 12, 2016—The City of Auburn Hills, a dynamic community committed to innovation and growth, will be awarded the 2016 Planning Excellence Award for Best Practice by the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP/APA Michigan) at its annual conference, Planning Michigan, on October 26, 2016 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. Auburn Hills is being honored for their Industrial Analysis that was completed in 2015.
Mayor Kevin McDaniel congratulated city staff for their efforts and hard work on this project. “We are thrilled to be recognized by the Michigan Association of Planning and are very proud of the work that Mr. Cohen and the staff did in 2015. This study served as a much needed analytical assessment for the community. This is smart planning at its best.”
A jury of professionals reviewed the project and included these comments in the recommendation:
“An impressive and incredible data set, coupled with a powerful report with pictures and charts, this project can most definitely help with decision-making in the city and multiple other entities. The analysis is a really valuable tool with a good chance of being used, and more communities are commissioning reports like this one showing how it exemplifies “best practice”. The in-depth analysis, presented with both historical context and forward thinking, puts the community in a proactive stance, and it is clear that they really took the time to invest in evidence-based decision making.”
Director of Community Development Steve Cohen led a team of city staff to gather information for this project. Mr. Cohen provided instrumental knowledge and insight of the community in order to successfully complete the industrial analysis.
“It goes without saying that I am proud of the work our staff has completed in order to receive this recognition for the Auburn Hills community. Steve Cohen’s work is among the best in the business and when it comes to Community Development Directors, he is second to none,” added City Manager Tom Tanghe.
