5-2-2012 CHANGES TO PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE EXEMPTION LAW
THIS ESTABLISHES TWO DEADLINES FOR A PROPERTY OWNER TO FILE A PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE EXEMPTION (PRE). STARTING IN 2012, IF YOU OWN AND OCCUPY YOUR HOME BY JUNE 1, 2012 YOU WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE EXEMPTION FOR BOTH THE SUMMER AND WINTER TAX LEVIES. IF YOU OWN AND OCCUPY YOUR HOME BETWEEN JUNE 2 AND NOVEMBER 1, YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR A PRE BEGINNING WITH THE 2012 WINTER TAX LEVY, PROVIDED THAT YOU FILE A TIMELY AFFIDAVIT.  IN ADDITION, A FORECLOSURE ENTITY CONDITIONAL RESCISSION WAS CREATED TO RETAIN A PRE ON A FORECLOSED PROPERTY AS LONG AS THE FORECLOSING ENTITY FILES THE PROPER AFFIDAVIT AND CERTAIN CRITERIA ARE MET - CLICK HERE OR CONTACT THE ASSESSORS OFFICE AT 248-370-9436 FOR MORE INFORMATION.
