FEATHERSTONE WATER MAIN AND RESURFACING PROJECT 2015 UPDATE

*UPDATE: 4/10/15

The contractor has just informed us that they will have equipment and staff on site and ready to begin pavement removals for the westbound travel lanes on Tuesday April 14th.   This will occur ONLY if all signage and traffic control is in place to advise motorists of alternate routing around the work zone.  Removals will begin at the Squirrel Road side and work to the west.  The time estimate for removal, new cement, cure time and re-open to traffic for westbound Featherstone is five weeks.

Please plan for westbound closure of Featherstone (Squirrel to Opdyke) to begin on Tuesday April 15,  2015.   Email updates will be provided if this date changes for any reason.

......

Work will resume on Featherstone Road beginning the week of April 13, 2015.  Traffic control and signage are being placed today and early next week to establish the detour route for westbound travel.  The contractor will have intermittent lane closure in each direction next week as storm structure upgrades are performed.

Pavement removals are planned to begin the week of April 20th where the westbound travel lanes will be closed to traffic.   Eastbound will remain open to traffic with at least one lane open at all times.   The exact date of westbound closure will be announced via email and the City’s website (www.auburnhills.org) as soon as we have confirmation from the contractor.  Weather conditions are being considered before starting pavement removals  in order to minimize the downtime of construction for the westbound travel lanes.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding the project.

The City of Auburn Hills has contracted with Florence Cement Company,  Shelby Twp., Michigan to install new water main and resurface Featherstone Road.  Staging and traffic control for the project is underway and work will begin starting the week of  June 3, 2014.  Project information is listed:

Project Area:

Featherstone Road from Squirrel Road to Opdyke Road.

Work Scope:

As you are aware, the Featherstone Road water main replacement and pavement resurfacing on eastbound Featherstone was completed last year.  Similar to many other road projects across the region, the Contractor was unable to complete westbound paving in 2014 due to various unforeseen conditions including a shortage of Portland cement toward the end of the 2014 construction season.   However the water main was successfully completed and all  Featherstone water customers have been connected to the new service line.

Phase II of the construction project will involve resurfacing the westbound side of Featherstone with finish grading and landscape restoration for the entire project area.   The contractor anticipates the start of Phase II construction beginning the week of April 6, 2015.  However, the start date is dependent  on weather conditions, frost conditions and frost laws to mobilize heavy equipment to the work site.

Phase II construction will commence with single lane closures along both the eastbound and westbound travel lanes. This stage of the project will complete storm water improvements and remaining eastbound work such as pathway paving, sidewalk ramps and driveway connections.  Once this work is completed, westbound Featherstone will be closed to traffic to allow for concrete removal and replacement.  Detour signage will be in place in advance of this stage of the project to advise motorists of traffic routing around the work zone.  Eastbound Featherstone will remain open to traffic at all times.  The removal and replacement of westbound Featherstone concrete is anticipated to take six weeks once removals begin.  We will notify of the westbound closure date as soon as the contractor can properly advance stage all the equipment and materials necessary to complete this work in an efficient manner.

We would like to thank the Featherstone business community and all motorists using Featherstone for their patience while work was performed last year.  Any questions related to the project can be directed to Dan Brisson, Roads Manager at dbrisson@auburnhills.org or the DPW office at 248-391-3777.

Traffic Routing:

The official  eastbound traffic routing  is Opdyke to Auburn to Squirrel.  Signage has been installed advising motorists of the detour route.  Motorists will also have the option of using M-59 or University Drive as a means to travel eastbound around the construction zone.

Phase II traffic routing will occur sometime in mid-August once the water main installation and resurfacing to the eastbound side is completed.  At this point traffic will be open eastbound while the westbound side is closed for resurfacing.

Business Access:

At all times, access to businesses along Featherstone will remain open to traffic.  During various stages of the project, temporary crossovers and driveway approaches may be necessary.  Businesses will be kept informed as temporary ingress/egress drives are needed.
